Snake Removal in Roanoke
Most snakes found around Roanoke homes are harmless and beneficial. A few are not, and the difference matters.
Rocky, south-facing slopes hold heat, and that is what brings snakes close to houses on the valley sides. Copperheads are present in this region and they are the identification worth getting right; most of what people find is a harmless species doing useful work on the rodent population. In autumn they move toward foundations and crawlspaces looking for somewhere to overwinter, which is when most calls come in.
Snakes in Roanoke County: who does what
The City of Roanoke states that its Animal Wardens do not handle wild animals unless the animal is a direct threat to public safety, and refers residents to a licensed trapper or a removal service. It also gives the state wildlife conflict helpline on 855-571-9003. That helpline is advice, not a visit; nobody from it is coming to your attic.
For identifying an animal or damage before anyone is paid to look, the Virginia Cooperative Extension, Roanoke County / Roanoke and Salem office is at 3738 Brambleton Avenue SW, Roanoke, VA 24018, (540) 772-7524 (office page).
What Virginia law says about snakes
Virginia has only three venomous snakes: the copperhead (statewide), the timber rattlesnake (state endangered in its southeastern canebrake form) and the cottonmouth (south and east of Petersburg). DWR quotes regulation 4VAC15-30-10 on its snake page: no wild animal may be taken or possessed unless the law specifically allows it. All Virginia rules →

Signs, and why they matter
- A shed skin in a crawlspace, garage or shed
- A snake seen in the garage, laundry, crawlspace or under a step
- Rodent activity that suddenly stops: snakes follow their food
- Venomous species do occur in this region and misidentification is common in both directions
- Any suspected venomous bite is an emergency: call 911, do not attempt to catch the snake
How removal works
Identification first, then physical removal with proper hooks and tubes. Longer term the answer is habitat and rodent control; a house with no mice is far less interesting to a snake.
Snake questions
How much does snake removal cost in Roanoke?
$150 โ $400 for removal of a single snake, depending on access and whether young are present. After a long stay in an attic the cleanup is often the bigger bill (attic restoration).
Is there a wrong time of year to deal with snakes?
Peak activity in spring and autumn, plus hot spells when snakes move into cool crawlspaces and garages.
